The often misunderstood Freemasonry bears within it a system of imagery used in its rituals and teaching materials. Although esoteric and difficult to understand without context, these images are often rather beautiful and should be viewed as an art form. This exhibition shows reproductions of a number of the masonic tracing boards, originally diagrams on cloth or board, placed on the floor of the temple during rituals, but later realised as some beautiful oil paintings. Also included are reproductions of masonic figures, engravings used as teaching aids for newly initiated masons. This material has rarely been seen, so this exhibition breaks new ground, by revealing some of the wonderful art at the heart of Freemasonry. |
