In this exhibition, Franzeska Ewart’s second at the Studio and Gallery, we see her develop the theme of The Birds Bear Gifts but this time, the magical gift the women receive is not something simple like a flower or a berry, but the gift of flight itself. Women are shown receiving feathers from brightly-plumaged birds, which are brought by birds of the Corvid family. However, the gift of flight, wonderful though it is, comes at a price, and in many of the paintings we see puncture marks in the woman’s skin as she is prepared to receive it. |
